Mainstream Spanking

From the 1960s (when the advent of what many call the postmodern style made establishing genres more difficult) to the present day, writers have been incorporating science--not only the commonly thought of science and technology but also the "soft" sciences such as psychology and sociology--into what was previously considered mainstream fiction. This book examines works by Thomas Pynchon, Doris Lessing, and others who incorporate science in fiction and exemplify the movement of mainstream fiction writers toward a new genre termed "span." It also examines works by some science fiction writers who are edging closer to the border of science fiction and slowly over into span. This book maps the boundaries of the new span genre of fiction and thus helps define texts that fall outside the realms of mainstream and science fiction. Diagrams are included and a bibliography and index.

This book is intended for use by Ministries of Health and other stakeholders involved in health delivery and dealing with HIV/AIDS, health sector educational/training institutions, intergovernmental agencies, NGOs and others. It includes a conceptual mapping of gender, health and HIV/AIDS, case studies and good practices, 'how to' tools and guidelines, figures/tables throughout to facilitate the reader, comparative statistics and other information. It explores key gender issues in the health sector in areas including reproductive health, infectious and communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, substance abuse, and mental health; and institutional arrangements and processes for mainstreaming gender in health. The section on HIV/AIDS addresses a gender analysis of its incidence, spread, impact on health and other sectors; gender-aware country case studies of combating HIV/AIDS; and using gender mainstreaming including the GMS as a multi-sectoral approach to combating HIV/AIDS.
