Human Science Research Council
Global Environmental Change: Research Pathways for the Next Decade by National Research Council, How can we understand and rise to the environmental challenges of global change? One clear answer is to understand the science of global change, not solely in terms of the processes that control changes in climate and the composition of the atmosphere, but in how ecosystems and human society interact with these changes. In the last two decades of the twentieth century, a number of such research efforts -- supported by computer and satellite technology -- have been launched. Yet many opportunities for integration remain unexploited, and many fundamental questions remain about the earth's capacity to support a growing human population. This volume encourages a renewed commitment to understanding global change and sets a direction for research in the decade ahead. Through case studies the book explores what can be learned from the lessons of the past 20 years and what are the outstanding scientific questions. Highlights include: Research imperatives and strategies for investigators in the areas of atmospheric chemistry, climate, ecosystem studies, and human dimensions of global change. The context of climate change, including lessons to be gleaned from paleoclimatology. Human responses to -- and forcing of -- projected global change. Implications for a global observing system driven by the scientific questions. This book offers a comprehensive overview of global change research to date and provides a framework for answering urgent questions.
Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States: Continuity and Change by National Research Council, The quality of research-doctorate programs at U.S. universities can be credited in many cases for the cultural and technological development of our society. Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States reports the results of an extensive study of 3,634 programs at 274 institutions in 41 disciplines within the broad fields of Arts and Humanities, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Physical Sciences and Mathematics, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. This book updates and expands upon the widely used An Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States, published in 1982. In addition to providing current data on measures used in the earlier study and introducing other measures of research-doctorate programs, the book examines changes in size, quality, and structure of the nearly 2,000 programs participating in both studies. Quantitative data on research grants, publications, citations, awards and honors, and the characteristics of program graduates are reported, along with the results of the National Survey of Graduate Faculty, which yielded ratings of the scholarly quality of program faculty and the effectiveness of programs in education research scholars/scientists.
